Responsibility Brand Strategy, Visual Identity, Design Systems & Creative Direction

Overview

Universal Ads launched with an ambitious goal: make premium TV advertising more accessible, intuitive, and effective for modern businesses.

But a new product also needed a new brand.

Working with the Universal Ads creative team, I helped build the visual identity from the ground up, developing a distinct brand language that could stand independently in the advertising technology space while remaining thoughtfully connected to the larger Comcast ecosystem.

The work extended far beyond individual assets. We developed the foundation for how Universal Ads would look, feel, communicate, and behave across every touchpoint, from marketing and product storytelling to presentations, campaigns, digital experiences, and motion.

The Challenge

Universal Ads needed to feel new without feeling disconnected.

As a Comcast company, the brand needed to maintain recognizable ties to an established enterprise organization, including accessibility and design standards, while creating enough visual independence to compete in a modern, fast-moving advertising landscape.

The challenge was to build a system that could:

  • Establish Universal Ads as a distinct and recognizable brand

  • Maintain strategic alignment with Comcast and NBC brand equity

  • Communicate innovation without relying on familiar “tech brand” conventions

  • Feel premium and sophisticated while remaining approachable

  • Work consistently across digital, print, motion, product, and marketing environments

  • Scale as the company, platform, and creative needs evolved

The result needed to feel both credible and new: a brand with the trust of Comcast behind it and a visual identity entirely its own.

My Role

My work focused on helping translate the company’s positioning and product vision into a cohesive creative system.

Rather than designing a collection of individual assets, we approached the project as the creation of a complete brand world.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Helped establish the overarching creative direction for the Universal Ads brand

  • Developed and evolved the visual identity across color, typography, gradients, imagery, illustration, and graphic systems

  • Defined visual principles that differentiated Universal Ads while maintaining alignment with Comcast standards

  • Built scalable brand guidance for use across teams and platforms

  • Established systems for photography, backgrounds, iconography, and illustration

  • Applied accessibility standards across color and visual treatments

  • Helped translate strategic brand attributes into practical design decisions

  • Created and reviewed brand applications across marketing, presentations, digital experiences, campaigns, and motion

  • Contributed to documentation that enabled designers and partners to apply the brand consistently

Building the Brand from the Ground Up

The Universal Ads identity was designed around a central tension: familiar enough to earn trust, distinct enough to signal something new.

Rather than simply inheriting Comcast's broader visual language, we identified the elements that could create continuity and deliberately refined them into a more focused system.

The Universal Ads palette distills the broader Comcast spectrum into a smaller, more recognizable group of colors, anchored by Nebula Purple and supported by orange, red, blue, and a structured neutral palette.

This allowed the brand to maintain lineage with Comcast while developing a visual signature of its own.

Creating a Visual World

The name Universal Ads became a conceptual starting point for the visual identity.

We developed a design language inspired by atmosphere, light, scale, and the visual qualities of the cosmos, without turning the brand into a literal space theme.

Soft glows, gradients, halos, arcs, and atmospheric backgrounds create a sense of energy and expansive reach. These elements also connect naturally to the curved form of the Universal Ads mark and reinforce the idea of advertising that can reach audiences across the broader television ecosystem.

The resulting aesthetic feels cinematic, digital-first, and future-facing while remaining polished enough for an enterprise audience.

A Distinct Color System

Color became one of the strongest identifiers of the Universal Ads brand.

Nebula Purple serves as the visual anchor, while Flare Orange, Solar Red, Cosmic Blue, and supporting tones create a flexible system for hierarchy, emphasis, data visualization, and expressive brand moments.

Rather than using the full Comcast color spectrum, we intentionally narrowed the palette to create stronger recognition and consistency.

Gradients add motion and dimensionality to the system, but their use is carefully controlled so they remain a recognizable brand device rather than decorative noise.

Designing a System That Could Grow

One of the most important goals of the project was making sure the identity could scale beyond its initial launch.

The brand guidelines establish not only what Universal Ads looks like, but the logic behind how the system should be used.

Logo construction, color behavior, accessibility, typography, photography, gradients, illustration, iconography, and visual hierarchy were documented so future teams could create new work without reinventing the brand with every project.

The system was designed to provide enough structure to protect brand recognition while leaving enough flexibility for experimentation and evolution.

Outcome

The ULearn brand evolved into a flexible visual ecosystem capable of supporting multiple learning products without sacrificing cohesion.

Rather than relying on a single visual treatment, the system creates a recognizable family of distinct identities, giving teams the flexibility to communicate different subjects, audiences, and experiences while remaining connected to the larger ULearn brand.

The result is a scalable framework built not only for the work that existed at the time, but for the programs and learning experiences that would come next.
